Isle de Palominos to Cayo Luis Pena, Spanish Virgin Islands

March 7, 2014

Another early rising this morning, we had more than a half day sail to Cayo Luis Pena and were anxious to get under way.  We had an enjoyable sail, the winds and waves cooperated nicely.  We found a nice cove that had a private mooring at Cayo Luis Pena and the empty white sandy beach was calling us.  We all got decked out in our finest snorkeling gear and set out for the beach.  What a wonderful surprise!  The snorkeling was by far the best we have come across since we left.  The coral was gorgeous and the fish were just amazing.  Big, little you name it – we saw it.  Daniel even saw a small manta ray.  We searched and searched for lobsters but came up empty.  After we had snorkeled for an hour or more we made our way to shore and decided to go exploring.  We met a man that warned us that there were unexploded bombs on the island, so we needed to be careful as we explored.  Daniel and Tim set off fighting the mangroves and thickets trying to get to the other side of the island (and probably looking for unexploded bombs).  Blenda and I weren’t having any part of the mangroves or thickets (too yukky) so we set back off towards the beach when low and behold we came across a path.  We decided to explore the path and it led us straight to the other side of the island.  I wouldn’t take a $100 for the look on Daniel and Tim’s faces when they emerged from the thorny path and saw me and Blenda standing on the beach enjoying the view on the other side of the island!  Awesome day!
